My 13 Eating Tips for Mighty Muscle Gains!

Proper eating starts with getting the right foods in your kitchen and the bad foods out. I treat my kitchen like a mini laboratory, a place that provides me with all the fuel I need to maintain hardcore intensity in life and training!

Below are my 13 essentials for fueling your muscle building journey.

1) Do your shopping on a full stomach.

Shopping when you are hungry leaves you more likely to purchase the quick fix foods high in sugar, fat and sodium. If you don’t believe me, try shopping first thing in the morning before breakfast and see how much junk makes it home!

2) Learn from those in the know.

Here is an extract from a local grocery store assistant I stumbled across;

‘As a veteran of supermarket employment, most of the time items sold end-of-day are reduced by as much as 50%. It is not to say these items are "bad" or "spoiled" but merely unfit to be sold the next day due to specific rules and/or laws. These items usually have a longer shelf life than actually noted; considered edible 3-5 days after sell by date. Also, when fresh items arrive, there is a need for shelf space, therefore, we reduce prices to push the products out.’

So basically, don’t be afraid to buy foods with huge reductions due to their use by date, they usually are considered edible 3-5 days past that date. I usually just buy and freeze immediately, then eat whenever I like.

3) The foods we want most of are found around the perimeter of the store.

Pretty common knowledge but thought I’d throw this in.

4) Know the leanness of your meats.

Meat is animal flesh and is most often the muscle. When you're selecting beef for example, choose cuts labelled "Choice" or "Select" instead of "Prime" — which usually has more fat.

Opt for cuts of meat with the least amount of visible fat (marbling). Even then, trim any visible fat before preparing the beef. When you're selecting ground beef, opt for the lowest percentage of fat.

5) Only eat ‘Whole Grains’ when eating grain foods.

Any food made from wheat, rice, oats, cornmeal, barley and any other cereal food are known as grain foods. Some good examples are breads, tortillas, rice’s and pastas.

Grains come in whole grains and refined grains. Refined grains are the ones you should steer clear from, they have been milled, which means the ‘bran’ and ‘germ’ have been removed during processing, reducing their energy, vitamin and fibre contents. Most common refined grains are; white breads, white rice and white flour.

6) Vegetable fact to remember: Fresh is better than frozen, frozen is better than canned.

I personally have a 1:3 ratio of fresh to frozen foods. If you are time and money conscious, buying frozen can be a lifesaver. Frozen vegetables are snap frozen almost immediately once they are picked which seals in valuable vitamins and minerals until they are cooked. They are a very convenient option as they are often available with a variety of different types and can be stored for long periods of time.

Fresh vegetables are by far the cheapest option when bought in bulk from wholesale locations. They taste great, can be cooked in a variety of different ways though a downside is they only stay in a fresh state for around 3-4 days.

7) Don’t get confused by ‘sugar free’.

This refers to sucrose (general table sugar). There are many other varieties of sugar that might find their way into your foods; honey, sweeteners, corn syrup, maltose, lactose, fructose, dextrose and glucose.

8) The stronger the cheese the further it travels.

When selecting cheeses, as cheese is naturally high in fats, choose the stronger flavoured varieties, this will mean that you will not need to use such large portions for it to impact on your foods.

9) Fats to run away from.

Yes some fats high in omega 3’s and omega 6’s are healthy when eaten in moderation, but that doesn’t mean they all are! Some fats like trans fats (trans-isomer fatty acid) and hydrogenated oils are not essential and certainly do not promote good health.

10) Canned foods can be extremely high in sodium (salts) and preservatives.

Food isn’t sold in canned because it looks good! It’s sealed airtight and treated with preservatives to maintain its shelf life. Only buy canned or jarred foods when the shit hits the fan!

11) Avoid UFO’S!

Unidentified food object (foods with unpronounceable ingredients)

12) Buy 2 plain foods rather than one treated.

When buying many dairy products like milk, yogurts and shakes, instead of buying the pre-flavoured options which are likely to be high in sugars and fats, buy the plain item and then buy another natural food like your favourite fruit to add for extra flavour.

13) Choose your condiments (sauce, seasoning & relish) sensibly.

We all know that eating the same things day after day can get damn well boring, so adding a splash of soy sauce of sprinkle of garlic pepper on your steak can do the world for your standard plain Jane dish.

Just take care with your selections, and eat in moderation. Choosing condiments high in salt and sugar can turn a normally nutritious meal into a damaging one in no time.

1) Favourite food would be fish and chips.. i do not eat it anymore as it is not that great having so much fried food.. but I have to say that was my favourite food growing up.
2) I have never really tried a diet before.

To Reuben,
I was wondering what your thoughts of meal plans such as only shopping on the outside of the grocery store? (to eliminate premade foods)
Eating within 100miles of your house.. Is it possible to get everything in your diet within a 100miles? it will all be locally grown.
Thoughts on meal replacements? There is a lot of that stuff out there.
How much is it nutrition and how much is it work in the gym?
I personally think the bottom line in gaining weight is intake vs expenditure. Thoughts for or against?
What type of guides do you go by for carbs vs protien? ie. .8g or protien/kg(of a person)?
Thanks Reuben, great site

I've tried weight gain and weight loss diets, not for very long, however both worked. I find gaining weight much harder, I don't have the time to eat enough!

My favorite food is mexican. it is my favorite food because it has alot of protien.(talking about tacos and burritos)

I honestly think hat diets alone do not entirely work. They are like if u want to cut a few pounds no more than 5 and depending on the persons built structure so overall i dont think a diet really works i think the best and true way to lose fat is cardio but you also lose some muscle with cardio...
wilco  - Did something like a diet   |2009-11-24 15:19:14

I've tried dieting but I think I went about it the wrong way so in the end I didn't get the results I'd hoped for

My favourite food is probably my Grans' Meatpie!

I have tried dieting both ways. I am able to lose weight by increasing my vegetable and fruit intake and minimizing carbs and fats while increasing cardio.

I found it more difficult to gain weight. To do so I just worked out at the gym and tried to eat anything anytime, especially before sleeping.

My favorite food is a nice steak with roasted red potatoes, accompanied by spinach or collard greans.

I have been on a diet before the p90x meal plan and I did lost weight but the selection of different meals were hard because I don't like the taste of some of the required foods.

My favorite food? Chicken. Roast chicken, fried chicken, chicken and biscuit, chicken soup, and especially bbq chicken!

I have dieted to put on good quality weight and have always succeeded easily. I have never tried dieting to lose weight, and instead succeeded at that with more aerobics. After my current bulking phase, I will try dieting to lose weight.

Fried chicken wings!! I love combining my suicide wings with hot and honey wings - AMAZING!

2) Have you ever tried a diet before and did it work? (Either weight gain or weight loss)

Yes to both. There was a weight loss. It was too extreme, however, and eventually (after about 8 months of success) I went back to my old bad habits.

My favorite food is cheese and chocolate!

Diet that hasn't worked? Tim Ferris' slow carb diet... I was bloated and sluggish every day on this, and had to stop before even a week was up. No carb doesn't work for me either... I think it largely depends on your blood type- what are your thoughts on that Reuben?
Belinda  - Miss   |2009-09-07 15:52:41
Hi Reuben, I'm interested in your opinion on something, my breakfast choice seems to be a constant area of disagreement between my boyfriend and I.

I have 2 pieces of wholegrain toast with vegemite (small amount of butter) every morning for breakfast...banana at 10amish and for lunch a turkey and salad sandwich (brown bread), an apple in the afternoon and then steak/fish/chicken and salad for dinner.

I'm a 33 year old female, wanting to maintain my weight but not necessarily build more muscle bulk - just tone.

My boyfriend maintains that I need more protein in my breakfast...I'd be interested to hear your thoughts?

Thanks

My current favorite food is Rice and Chicken. Steamed Rice, Chicken cooked in water, and mix in something to flavor it.

Only diet I ever tried was when I went totally off sugar. I lost 25 lbs of fat I'm following said diet again, and staying pretty slim while still making gains, so I'm happy.

Thanks much for taking the time to write these:D

1. My favorite food is a home cooked meal I guess. Its brown rice with beans of course. With tomato sauce mixed with string beans, hot dogs or vegetarian meat, garlic and onions.

2. I've never really tried a diet of any but I have tried the theory of just eating smaller portion meals higher in protein so that I can loose weight and seemingly gain muscle at the same time. It worked I guess but its a lot of work and money that I don't have! Now I'm still kinda on the same diet just doing what you said running before workouts for about 20 minutes in my case for maybe 3-4 days a workout session

1. traditional british sunday roast, with plenty of mint sauce, my dads is best lol

2. I have kind of dieted before. I wanted to lose some fat so i cut what i was eating in half, wasnt any genius behind it, and i didnt cut anything out really, i eat healthy anyway, I heard that if you cut out say fat in your diet, as soon as u put it back in, your body stores it up to savour it, is that right?

I lost the fat from just doing that really, I basically went from 3 large meals to 5 - 6 really small ones. I lost alot of fat, and i didnt feel hungry. After a while, i think my stomach just kinda shrunk and got used to it.
