For people who live in the western countries, I am sure that you have heard of the famous Dr Atkins diet plan. It isn't important if the Atkins diet is a successful diet or not, in all cases it is still up for debate, but it's the most advertised diet. Atkins plan has been for a while the top hyped dieting plan around and there are millions of people have tried it in all over the world. It was estimated by researchers that more than three millions people in the UK alone have tried this diet.

  • Cutting down carbohydrates

The question here is what is the idea behind Atkins diet? the basic idea is "cutting down carbohydrates" but dieters is allowed to eat high fat food. Yes Atkins diet allows people to eat steaks, eggs and cheese. It sounds like a dream. The diet that give the chance of losing extra weight while still enjoying the ham food will be very exciting diet. But there are other bad things behind Atkins, you not allowed to eat bread and salad with the steak. This will become a problem after one or two weeks. The problem is how much meat may you eat without eating a one vegetable at all?

So, the basic idea of Atkins diet "cutting out the carbohydrates" this action will force our bodies to burn the all stored fats to generate the energy that our bodies need. Carbohydrate food like vegetables, rice, potatoes, bread, pastries, pasta, milk, fruit will be not allowed according to the Atkins diet. Junk food and soft drink will also be not allowed. What about the allowed food list, you are allowed to eat chicken, mayonnaise, meat, butter, eggs, fish , cheese and cream. these are the only food for the first two weeks, we can call this period the Induction Phase.
Ongoing Weight Loss

After 2 weeks, you can increase the intake of carbohydrates by five grams/day. This is the 2nd phase and we can call it the ongoing Weight Loss. The dieter should find what is the amount of carbohydrates should be increased before his/her body is unable to lose between one and three pounds/ week. We can call this process as the Critical Carbohydrate Level for healthy weight loss and in this process the amount of carbs will stop growing. The Ongoing Weight Loss phase will be continued until you reach your desired weight.
Pre-Maintenance

With five to ten pounds left to shed it is time to enter the third stage of the diet. This one is called Pre-Maintenance, in this phase the dieter can increase the carbs intake by ten grams/day to slowdown the whole weight loss process.
Lifetime Maintenance

Let's go to the fourth phase that can be called the Lifetime Maintenance, in this phase the dieter will begin a lifetime of eating, this lifetime eating plan adjust the amount of carbs to 90 grams of carbs/day. The big challenge here is the dropping from 250g or more to less than 100g and for the rest of your life. It is really a big challenge.
The side effects

In fact, Atkins diet may cause some dangerous side effects . You can do well with this plan, but you may got heart problems from all the fat food they ate, kidneys problems from the high-protein content that you eat. Dizziness is very expected during this diet, weakness also an expected symptom when the body goes into starvation mode after the missing of carbohydrates. Without fruits and vegetables that give you the high-fiber content, the dieter can also expect the symptom of constipation. The lack of dairy products will also lead to a significant drop in the amount of calcium which your body need it and may cause osteoporosis or other bone conditions later on.

ive recently read a called protain power
which inculds a diet made up of veg and meat, lots of fats and protain and a low carb diet.

instead of the low fat high carb diet, and i thought the book was a great buy, it explains a lot for all those who are have diabetes or other insulin illnesses

I love this site but I wouldn\'t really call that a review of the Atkins diet, it was basically a primer.

I used this diet about 5 years ago for around 4 months. I lost nearly 4 stone but it would be misleading of me to say that it was all diet. I was working a manual labour job 12 hours per day and I was cycling 3 miles to work and 3 miles back.

For the first time in my life, I was starting to get a 6 pack. I stopped doing the diet after weeks of people telling me that I had lost too much weight. I don\'t feel that I did but when a big guy loses a lot of weight people comment how ill he looks. I was getting it in the neck at work and home so I thought there must have been some truth to it. Plus, the diet\'s rather restrictive in terms of what you can eat, so it gets boring over time which means it\'s very easy for you to be tempted off it.

So great I lost the weight. But now 5 years later I\'m fatter than I ever was. Why? Well because I\'m greedy. I don\'t eat 1 bag of crisps, I eat 10. I don\'t have 4-5 beers, I have 15-20 and to be fair, my company closed down and I went back to school to learn computers. Biggest mistake of my life. I\'m not sat down for a crazy amount of hours.

Do I think I\'d have put all the weight back on if I didn\'t change my lifestyle dramatically? No but shit happens.

If you you\'re looking to rip up pretty quickly. The Atkins diet will do that for you but when you stop the diet, be prepared to work your ass off in the gym or the weight you put back on will be fat.

As for the health risks. Atkins is good for diabetics (can\'t remember which type, please do your own research), as it controls your insulin. Yes I\'m sure it can cause heart disease but one thing it\'s very good at is getting rid of body fat. Abdomen fat is one of the big causes/correlation\'s of heart disease so it\'s a trade off. I don\'t recommend the diet for life, I recommend it for the 2 months leading up to summer, maybe just 1 month if you\'re in good shape.

Things to expect. The lack of Fiber in your diet causes an initial bout of constipation. You don\'t feel constipated/uncomfortable, you just don\'t feel the need to go. Then about 3-5 days later, you will have (and I\'m sorry for being crude) a very hot poo. Yes that\'s right, an absolute steaming hot bowl movement which will burn the crap out of you while you try your best to force it out. Don\'t worry, this is natural and it\'s only for the first week or two. Then things will go back to normal.

Some might think that as you are eating so much protein, that you\'d be able to lift lots. That\'s just not true. In fact, I noticed a rather quick drop in my strength. Again, this didn\'t last for long, just the first few weeks as my body changed systems and it was worth it in the end.

If you are going to do this diet, I recommend that you read books as you are doing it. A website that tells you what you can eat is all well and good but when you learn the science behind it, you will be more motivated and you will be armed for when all the \"much smarter than you\" people say that it\'s going to kill you. Believe me, they come out of the woodwork to tell you how unhealthy it is. It\'s funny that they don\'t do that when you\'re getting fat, which would most likely prevent you from putting the weight on in the first place.

Other things to note, there are some great support sites for the atikins diet. I don\'t want to post links on here out of respect for Reuben but some of these forums are filled with people who have been there, done that and they know the little tricks for success and failure. You\'ll also be able to see, just how many of them couldn\'t stick it out or are back on the horse after a bad fall. Make no mistake about it, the Atkins diet is hardcore, it\'s not for people who think \"Well, one night on the town isn\'t going to hurt, I\'ll get back on it tomorrow\".

The diet works because your body changes fuel tanks for energy. This is called Ketosis and it\'s your ability to maintain ketosis that keeps you losing weight. If you cheat on the diet, your body breaks ketosis and therefore changes fuel tanks again. This means you need to start the induction phase again (which is hard to talk yourself into) and so that one nights cheat, will basically take you 3 days to get back on the diet, then however long to rebuild your tolerance up. Plus there\'s a thyroid health risk for stop/starting on the diet so you could be doing yourself harm.

Weight loss is different for everyone and everyone should have different goals and results. I\'m 6\'1 and my weight fluctuates between 16 and 18 stone. I can quite easily lose a stone on the diet in 2 weeks, sure that\'s great, but so much of it\'s water weight that would come off in most diets (and therefore will go back on straight away) and the rest will only stay off if I maintain the diet or change my fitness regime.

The one thing I\'m curious about, is if I was to lose a lot of weight using the diet, then go back to normal eating but increasing my weight regime. Would I theoretically put a lot of muscle on instead of fat? Normally when I come off the diet, my desire to keep fit has slid and so I\'ve never found out.
